Commendation Awarded
to Zion Heroes!
Samycia Lewis, Ashley Cutrer and Jennifer Range were recognized
for their bravery and resourcefulness that saved the life of
drowning victim James Woods. Plaques were presented to each
and the Mayor gave a dramatic telling of the events that would
certainly have led to a fatality if not for the quick and selfless
response of these three individuals.
Commendation awarded to Jerome Cole
Jerome "Scooter" Cole, a former student of Mayor Harrison,
has just made history! Captain Cole now serving with the U.S.
Air Force was recognized for his valor and commitment to recruit
and lead the first All African American crew of the 126th Air
Refueling Wing for the US military. His contribution to his
country and the advance of African American history received
a standing ovation from the assembled crowd.
The sale of a 3-acre parcel of land to Grand Appliances, Inc.,
was finalized by council action. This sale will ensure that
Grand Appliance relocates its Midwest corporate headquarters
to Zion and will bring new jobs, tax revenue and retail shopping
opportunities to the City of Zion. Construction on the new facility
is anticipated for early spring 2003.
Council approves another Facade Grant plan! The property at
2770 Sheridan Road will soon be under renovation as the new
owner adds new windows, signage and attractive awnings in anticipation
of new retail tenant. The grant was in the amount of $94,750.
ALDI Foods has purchased three properties in downtown Zion to
advance their plans to build a new 17,000 sq. ft. retail store.
This new adventure is expected to bring at least new jobs, nearly
$60,000 in new property taxes and generate an estimated $8 million
in new sales for the city. In addition, the new project is located
in a TIF district allowing the new revenue to be used to pay
off bonds for the new downtown streetscape nearly two years
early, a savings of nearly $500,000 for Zion! ALDI is hoping
to opening in time for Christmas 2003.
Salvation Army to relocate to K-Mart Plaza!
The City has agreed to purchase the old Salvation Army location
in downtown Zion for the purpose of renovation and marketing
to a new owner. This will benefit the city by an anticipated
increase in sales at their new location and allow the Facade
Grant Program to take root on the east side of the downtown
business district. The Army will begin moving into their new
home in early April.
