Zion boasts many attractions. Below is a sampling of attractions
in or near our city.
Anglers can fish from the shore of a small lake, or go out
for Coho salmon aboard a Lake Michigan fishing boat. A prime
attraction for visitors are the six and one-half miles of
sandy beach at Illinois Beach State Park, a wondrous place
covering 4,160 acres of beach front where there are family
campsites, a beautiful resort hotel, hiking and biking trails,
and an Interpretive Center that's open year around. In winter,
the trails become cross country ski and snowmobile trails
and there's ice fishing on the inland lakes.
Five miles north of Illinois Beach is North Point Marina,
the state's newest marine center, with 1,500 slips and all
the services. During the summer months, the marina features
power boat races among a series of special events. The marina
brings many recreational boaters to the area each year. A
number of charter boats operate out of the marina, taking
people on fishing excursions.
Illinois Beach State Park is Illinois' most popular state
park receiving approximately one million visitors annually.
Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center, is located in
the heart of Illinois Beach State Park, close to the lakeshore.
It offers 96 rooms, an Olympic-size indoor pool, a fine restaurant,
and banquet and meeting facilities that can accommodate up
to 500 persons. If you prefer something smaller, dozens of
excellent motels dot the Zion area, many along Sheridan Road,
the city's main commercial avenue. Annual Jet Ski Races are
held at the State Park in June every year. Competitors come
from all over the region to participate in these races.
For a full day of all around family fun, head to Six Flags
Great America, the premier theme park in the Mid-West. It
features more than 100 rides and other attractions on 100
acres in nearby Gurnee. Gurnee is also the site of Gurnee
Mills, the world's largest outlet shopping mall, with a mile-long
concourse lined with stores.
Not far away as well is Cuneo Museum and Gardens, in Vernon
Hills. The museum boasts a grand collection of old masters,
17th century tapestries, and a collection of beautiful oriental
rugs, fine silver, and sculptures.
