:
LOUISIANA

Current state policies:

Secondhand Smoke (preemption?)
Current statewide law allows smoking in public places and workplaces. It mandates an indoor smoking area be designated in local government buildings. State law mandates that smoking be allowed in the corridors of the Superdome (home of the New Orleans Saints). State law preempts local ordinances that are more protective than the state law.

State Tax:
36 cents per pack of cigarettes.

State/Local legislative successes 2001-2003:
The cigarette excise tax increased by 12 cents per pack in 2002 to 36 cents. Two cents per pack of the excise tax are now dedicated to funding tobacco prevention and cessation initiatives.
