In 1997, the American
Medical Association Foundation was awarded a grant from The Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation for funding "Special Opportunities" proposals
from SmokeLess States grantees. The program was funded for a three-year
cycle, extended for a fourth year and has awarded more than 20 grants to
20 SmokeLess State coalitions, totaling $2.7 million. These grants were
made available to assist grantees with previously unforeseen challenges
and opportunities in tobacco control.
Special Opportunities has been renewed as a 3-year $8 million program so
that state coalitions funded under the SmokeLess States can take advantage
of similar funding for initiatives in tobacco control.
The Special Opportunities funds, as with other RWJF awards within SmokeLess
States, are not used for lobbying; required a component of matching dollars
from coalition partners; and are evaluated by both SmokeLess States staff
and members of the program's National Advisory Committee.
