Tennessee is a super pre-emptive state. Currently, the tobacco excise tax
is 20 cents.
State/local legislative successes 2001 - 2003:
During the 2002 session, the Tennessee General Assembly raised the tobacco
excise tax from 7 cents to the current level of 20 cents. This was the first
increase since 1969; Tennessee was the first southern tobacco state to increase
taxes on tobacco.
